In the end, the brothers were granted a financial dowry that had belonged to their Maker and given the choice of freedom, under Council rule, or an alternative—to become Wardens.

The woman looked up from Sugar to him with a smile, and Charlie blinked when he saw her startling light green eyes.  His attention tracked downward.  Long blonde curls rioted about her face and shoulders, perfectly complimenting her white sleeveless blouse with ruffles around the collar and down along the buttons, and a pair of tan slacks.

Dropping his sunglasses back into place to cover his bloodshot eyes, he tried not to stare, but found the combination of wild curls and sophisticated clothes on a beautiful woman with a helluva body impossible to resist.

She sidestepped Sugar in her strappy high heels. He noticed her gaze sweep over him before her smile faded and she walked toward a metallic green Toyota Hybrid parked in front of the shop.  He ran a self-conscious hand through his dark hair that desperately needed a trim.  Why
the hell hadn't he showered, or at the least combed it before taking Sugar for a walk?  Maybe worn something other than a ratty tee shirt, cutoff jeans and holey tennis shoes.

Yeah, so what, he'd brushed his teeth, but he should've shaved, too.  Not that she'd look twice at him anyway, but still, it might have kept him from feeling like a total loser.

He turned back to the coffee shop and saw Carrie hold up a hand to let him know she'd be out in a minute.Anticipation for the reviving cup of French Roast she'd bring out made his mouth water almost as much as the woman who'd given him the visual brush-off.

"Excuse me?"

The feminine voice spun Charlie around on his heel to see the beautiful blonde standing by her car.She lifted the iced coffees, and with another smile, asked, "Would you mind getting my door?"

His heart skipped a beat."Of course."

He moved forward, but remembered Sugar about three seconds too late.  She shoved her large black nose under the woman's hands in an excited demand for attention.  The woman's fingers clenched on the plastic cups as she gasped in surprise and both lids on her coffees popped clear off.  Charlie pulled on the leash, but watched helplessly as one cup dumped down the front of her shirt and the other spilled along the length of her right thigh.Charlie Russell lived with a secret for fourteen years, but now guilt has pushed him to the breaking point. Paula McLain has taken on the task of writing a story most of us probably think we already know--that of a doomed starter wife. To make life more difficult, McLain proposes to tell us about Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley Richardson, who is a twenty-eight-year-old Midwestern spinster when she marries the twenty-one-year-old unpublished, (but already cocksure) writer and runs off to Paris with him. The talent and joy of this novel is that McLain does a startling job of making us understand this as a great love story and seducing us into caring deeply, about both Ernest and Hadley, as their marriage eventually comes apart.

This novel moves beyond the dry bones of biography or skewed personal vision of memoir, and takes a leap into the emotional lives of these characters. It is a leap of faith for those readers who think they know Hemingway, but McLain’s voice sticks close enough to historical material, and to the words and tone of Hemingway’s own writing, to be convincing. She had me at the description of young Hadley’s father committing suicide.

Hadley is also crippled by a childhood fall and trapped into spinsterhood by her mother’s declining health and eventual death. By the time she meets Hemingway, we are rooting for her to make a break for foreign shores--even as we understand the danger of marrying a tempestuous man. Hemingway is all nervous purpose, ambition and charisma as he meets Hadley and is drawn to her quiet strength and ordinary American sweetness. In his youth and uncertainty, she is his rock and yet we already suspect that as he grows in artistic power, she will become an unwanted anchor. Through Hadley’s eyes and plain-speaking voice, we see all of twenties Paris and the larger-than-life artists who gather in the cafes. We drink tea with Gertrude Stein and champagne with Fitzgerald and Zelda. We run with the bulls in Pamplona and spend winters in alpine chalets. And we see, through her love for him, the young writer becoming the Hemingway of legend. Perhaps it is the nature of all great artists to be completely selfish and obnoxious, but Hadley’s voice is always one of compassion. Even as Hemingway leaves her completely out of The Sun also Rises, even as Hemingway publicly flirts with other women, she continues to explain and defend him. It is a testament to Paula McLain that the reader is slow to dislike Hemingway, even as he slowly and inexorably betrays Hadley’s trust.

I loved this novel for its depiction of two passionate, yet humanly-flawed people struggling against impossible odds--poverty, artistic fervor, destructive friendships--to cling on to each other. I raise a toast to Paula McLain’s sure talent.

Becky clutched the plate to her mid-section, standing as still as a rabbit caught in a predators sight, when she saw the way he stood at the door, watching her.

Her hands began the all too familiar shaking, and she heard a roaring sound in her ears and a crashing, splintering noise at her feet. She looked down at the broken plate and in her confusion quickly bent down to retrieve it. A sharp pain in her hand jerked her upright again.
The spell was broken when his deep voice intruded on her consciousness. “Goddammit!”
Becky stood immobile as he pushed off the door and was quickly upon her. He picked up her hand in his. “Becky, what the hell?”
She looked down at his hands holding hers and saw a stream of blood running from a cut on her finger. She realized she had compounded her mistake by cutting her finger. The plate was in shards on the floor. She knew those plates had belonged to his mother. Tears welled in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Sheriff.”
He pulled her to the kitchen and his large body crowded her against the counter as he held her hand where it was bleeding. His arms wrapped around her from behind, his chest pressed into her back as he held her bleeding finger in the pail of cold water. The water turned pink as she tried not to faint.
His mouth moved to her ear. “You’re more trouble than you’re worth.” He growled the words in her ear. His warm breath caressed her face.
“I’m sorry about your m-mother’s china.” Her voice wobbled from the impact of his nearness.
He reached around and tugged her chin up and around so he could look into her eyes. “You know this isn’t about the goddamn china, don’t you, Becky?”
